Iris recognition systems

Iris recognition systems measure the unique patterns of the iris to identify and authenticate a subject. The unique characteristics of the iris and low false acceptance/rejection rates are some of the benefits of using iris recognition systems. Iris recognition, a biometric access control technology, is a fast and non-intrusive method.

Iris recognition biometric capture process:

  1. Capturing the image of the eye.
  2. Defining the boundaries of the iris and optimising the image.
  3. Analysing and generating image data.
  4. Storing and comparing the image.
  5. During recognition, an image is taken, and pattern from this image is then matched to the stored pattern.

Advantages of iris recognition systems

  1. The smallest outlier population: In some cases even blind people have successfully used iris recognition, since the technology depends upon iris pattern and not sight.
  2. Exhibits long-term stability: The structure of the human iris is fixed from about the age of one and remains constant. Certain exceptions would be rare diseases, ophthalmologic surgical procedures or trauma wherein the iris structure could change. Due to this, re-enrolment is rarely required.
  3. Ideal for managing large databases: It’s the only biometric authentication technology developed to work in the 1-n or exhaustive search mode.
  4. Incomparable search speed: Its search mode speed is unmatched by any other technology.
  5. Intuitive user interface: Using this biometric access control technology is an intuitive experience, making it simple to use.
