Network Security Redefined

Home automation

Home automation is a solution to monitor and control basic home functions automatically and sometimes remotely. It includes control over appliances, heating and cooling systems, lighting, sprinklers etc. From a security standpoint, you can remotely monitor and access your surveillance cameras, alarm systems, smoke detectors, locks and other security devices in your house. Home automation may also allow you to access and control your devices from anywhere in the world with the help of any internet-connected device. This technological solution ensures all your home devices and systems are networked together, thus offering seamless control and security of your home.

Components

The primary components of a typical home automation system comprises a computer, smartphone or tablet, emergency power backup for the computer, software, interconnected cables or wireless links, speedy internet connection, and systems or devices to be controlled. Home devices and systems are linked over a medium such as electrical power cables, coaxial cable, radio frequency, infrared or spread spectrum technology.

Benefits – Safety with convenience

Home automation has various benefits such as security, control, convenience, energy savings and money savings. Home automation with safety and voice control features helps senior citizens and the physically challenged.

Some of the benefits of home automation are stated in detail:

  • Security: Security systems can be accessed and monitored from anywhere via live video feed, email and text notifications.
  • Safety: Sensors that can detect fire, water leak, motion, carbon monoxide and other occurrences help mitigate disasters because they can directly communicate with you.
  • Control: Applications on smartphones and tablets remotely control devices and systems within your home.
  • Savings: Devices such as sprinklers, water heater, Wi-Fi enabled lights and power monitoring outlets connected with the home automation system reduce energy and water use.
  • Convenience: Door locks activated when all the lights in the house are off, having your house lights turn on when you arrive or the door opening as you approach it are some examples of smart technology.

Internet of Things

Home automation combined with “The Internet of Things” transforms an automated home into a smart home. The Internet of Things utilises a blend of sensors and smart systems to connect objects to a network, allowing these objects to communicate with each other and complete tasks.

Advent of home automation

Home automation is not all about luxury, it’s now a necessity. Today's technology makes it affordable for homeowners to buy and install their own home automation systems. The regular consumer’s dream to live in a "smart home" has now become a reality.
