ADT has recently won a major contract to protect certain sections of the London Underground rail network, providing fire and security systems for the bustling transport network.

The London Underground became the world’s first underground railway when it opened in London in 1863.  Today, the London Underground is one of the busiest underground rail networks in the world, with over 3 million passenger journeys a day, some 507 trains in operation across 13 separate lines, serving 275 stations and over 16,500 staff.

Security Concerns

Managing the fire and security elements of a network of this magnitude and ensuring the ongoing safety and security of passengers is a major task.  Keeping an ageing network operating safely is difficult and as a result, London Underground is embarking on a program to transform the network over the next decade as rolling stock, infrastructure and real estate are revamped and upgraded.

The Solution

ADT is helping to keep London Underground safe by maintaining the fire systems on the busy Jubilee Line.  In the last year, ADT has also provided services for work on the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly Lines.  In addition, ADT is currently installing a fire system at the Stratford Market Depot to ensure the safety of staff and rolling stock.  ADT is using CCTV cameras to detect smoke, which provides instant alarms back to the existing fire detection system.

A contract to upgrade the fire systems at four London Underground stations, Chalk Farm and Tuffnell Park stations on the Northern Line, and Swiss Cottage and St John’s Wood stations on the Jubilee Line, has also been secured.

Comments

ADT’s core business is the integration and installation of electronic fire and security solutions for a wide range of applications.  However, ADT recognises that rail companies have very particular security and surveillance requirements and in order to help London Underground, and the rail industry as a whole, meet the challenges they face, ADT Rail was formed.  ADT Rail is able to dedicate a specific resource and focus to the rail sector, where experienced personnel can provide a tailored service” says Mark Formby, Business Development Manager of ADT Rail.
